The aim of our paper is to put the communicational foundations of Perelman's theory of argumentation into perspective. After showing the renewed interest in rhetoric in the field of communication sciences, we will examine the critique of Western rationalism as a necessary prerequisite for Perelman's new perspectives on rhetoric as a theory of argumentation. We will then address the role of the audience in the argumentative exchange. Finally, we will highlight the ethical aspect of the new rationality that Perelman proposes in the contemporary debate on public space.
