Trata-se de um estudo sobre as diferentes tendências que disputam, no campo da educação ambiental, as noções de crise, de desenvolvimento sustentável, bem como de educação, e repercutem em diferentes propostas de superação da crise contemporânea, genericamente, podendo ser identificadas segundo duas tendências básicas: uma de vocação conservadora e outra de vocação emancipatória. O artigo analisa as diferenças teóricas e práticas entre tais tendências, realizando uma crítica em relação às propostas conservadoras para afirmar a necessidade de uma educação
ambiental identificada com um projeto civilizatório sustentável social e ambientalmente.

The social-ambiental crisis and the environmental education tendencies
Abstract
This study deals with different trends that argue, within the field of environmental education, notions of crisis, sustainable development, as well as of education, about reflecting on distinct propositions for overcoming the contemporary crisis which may be generally identified as two basic trends: one of conservative tendency, the other of liberating tendency. The article analyzes the theoretical and practical differences between these trends, presenting a critical discussion concerning the conservative propositions
in order to affirm the need for an environmental education which may be identified as a sustainable civilizing project, in both social and environmental aspects.
